San Diego Humane Society is hiring Full-Time Regular Dispatchers in our Humane Law Enforcement Division! Dispatchers receive emergency and non-emergency calls for service from the public, evaluate information received to provide an appropriate response to calls for service, and dispatch humane officers, field service officers, police, fire, ambulance or other assistance. The expected hire date for these positions will be May 2018 and is dependent upon funding. SUMMARY: Receive emergency and non-emergency calls for service from the public; evaluate information received to provide an appropriate response to calls for service and dispatch humane officers, field service officers, police, fire, ambulance or other appropriate assistance in accordance with established procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:include the following; however other duties may be assigned.

  • Receiving and transmitting routine and emergency telephone and radio messages

  • Receiving and transmitting messages between field units

  • Maintaining radio contact with officers on assignments

  • Keeping the supervisor and officers informed while monitoring a multitude of other public safety radio frequencies

  • Answering incoming calls and directing them to appropriate department or agency as required

  • Assisting citizens with requests for service and general inquiries utilizing a computer system to enter and retrieve data related to calls and contacts

  • Preparing and maintaining logs and reports

  • Regularly and predictably attend work in-person as scheduled

  • Attend in-service training, staff and volunteer meetings as required

  • Wears name tag at all times during business hours

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:None.SALARY:This position starts at a rate of $14.56 per hour and salary will be commensurate with experience.


EDUCATION, SKILL, EXPERIENCE:High School graduate or equivalent required. Requires one year of paid customer service experience handling high-pressure situations and dealing with difficult public contact encounters over the phone or in person; experience with heavy incoming call volume preferred; knowledge of office procedures including record keeping and prioritization skills; knowledge of basic office equipment, including computerized equipment and familiarity with MS office software preferred; ability to read, write and speak English; excellent written and verbal skills and strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills. Bilingual-Spanish preferred. Valid CA Driver’s license and good driving record required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Must be able to: talk, hear, sit, stand, twist, and turn to monitor and operate telecommunications and radio equipment; reach, grasp grip for the phone console; listen to alarms, radios and phones using a headset; move from a work station to a computer printer; communicate verbally with the public and employees; repetitively use hands to operate computers; flex the neck upward and downward; twist the neck and the waist; read computer monitors and distinguish light colors; put fingers together firmly and reach above and below shoulder level and lift, push or pull 20 pounds for lifting phone books and computer paper boxes. WORK ENVIRONMENT:Standard office environment, with exposure to environmental conditions that include working near and potentially caring for animals. Work hours will include varying shifts, weekends, holidays, evenings and overtime. There is a potential for exposure to parasites and infectious diseases that can be carried and transmitted by animals.
